2. Remove potential spider harborages. Removal of potential spider harborages is vital to long-term spider control. Indoors, store boxes off the floor and away from walls to limit their use by spiders, and all the cracks should be securely taped closed. Outdoors, piles of wood and other debris should be removed, as spiders frequently hide in these areas. Heavy vegetation should also be trimmed to be at least 18 inches away from your home.
3. Vacuum outdoor spider webs. For web building spiders, vacuums equipped with several extension tubes are useful in the removal of spiders and their webs and egg sacs from high corners, rafters, overhead beams, and otherwise unreachable surfaces. If you are using a wet-vac type of vacuum, leave a solution of water and bleach inside to kill the spiders it sucks up.
4. Change outdoor lighting. Insects are attracted to the lights on your home, and subsequently, so are spiders. Replace mercury vapor lights with sodium vapor lights. Sodium vapor or yellow lights attract fewer insects. The further the lights are mounted you’re your home, the better.
5. Improve attic and crawlspace ventilation. We mentioned sealing off the attic helps keep spiders out of your home, but proper installation is also pivotal. Proper ventilation in crawlspaces and attics reduces excess moisture that draws in crickets, roaches, and other insects spider feed on. Fewer insects mean fewer spiders.
